Serena Williams has announced the end of her season due to a persistent foot injury.
Serena has not competed since lifting the Wimbledon title back in July. A freak accident in which she stepped on a piece of broken glass in a restaurant a couple of weeks later, will keep her out until the start of the 2011 season.
Serena was planning to make her return at last year's Generali Ladies Open in Linz but she aggravated the injury again in training and will now be unable to compete at the end of year WTA Championships and Fed Cup final.
"It is with deep frustration that I am withdrawing from the WTA Championships at Doha and the Fed Cup Final," Serena said in an official statement. "Pushed by my desire to return to competition, I trained too hard too soon and re-tore the tendon in my foot. As a result, yesterday morning I had to have another procedure to repair it. I thank everyone for their continued support during this difficult time and look forward with strength and determination to getting back on the court."
