This year's US Open has brought us many an attractive female tennis player. Unfortunately, Maria Sharapova, Ana Ivanovic and Daniela Hantuchova all were eliminated within the first week. Then there's Bethanie Mattek of the US, whose wardrobe has gotten notices, but in this case, it's not a good thing. Thanks to my friend, Linda, who pointed this out to me. The Women's Tennis Blog wrote about Bethanie's attire which included a hideous gold dress with headband (picture courtesy of Ms. Flux at Flickr).

When it comes to synthesizing speed of objects, tennis players are better than other athletes and non-athletes. The Swiss study could provide insight into the future of sports training, particularly hand-eye coordination sports like tennis, cricket or baseball, according to a study out of the EPFL tech school in Lausanne.

Leila Overney is an EPFL researcher on the study.

Overney tested 18 tennis players, 19 triathletes and 19 non-athletes. But she says when it comes to attention and detection tasks tennis players are not better.

OVERNEY: Attention tasks where (you) have to do two different things at the same time or detection tasks where (you) have to detect a particular target that was a particular pattern among different patterns and detect one particular pattern. They were not better at doing that.

HELMICK: Can what you’ve discovered help Roger Federer beat Raphael Nadal on clay?
OVERNEY: No, we are not that far. It has some implications for training because these are tasks that are known to be tasks that improve with training. They are used regularly with people who have visual impairment, so definitely it would be something that is easily, easily done. It is an easy training method and now the thing is trying to figure out how much of that training would help tennis performance.

Next up for Overney and her fellow researchers is to find out if tennis players are naturally gifted at visual perception or if the athletes have honed their skills accordingly.

Wimbledon Lawn Tennis 2006 is going on!
Started on the 26th of June. Well, I enjoy watching tennis though, most people might say it's pretty boring. My least favourite tennis player would definitely have to be Maria Sharapova. Perhaps Roger Federer too but Sharapova...she's way at the bottom of my list of tennis players. Basically, Jas simply worships Sharapova. Two reasons why I dislike Sharapova....
1) She grunts too much while playing.
2) She dresses strange. Turning the court into a runway....
Look at what she wore at the Australian Open...looked like some maternity dress. In case you are wondering which one, it was the blue Nike one. Even the comentator commented on it for goodness sake. Recently, if I did not get it mixed up, it was at the French Open, she wore something that looked remarkably like a pink tutu. Well, now it seems like she has more of a sense of dressing because she's starting to use shorts n top instead, rather like Hantuchova.

A Pain Doctor’s Guide To Tennis Elbow
Steven D. Waldman, M.D.

Summertime is here and pain clinic waiting rooms are filling up with weekend warriors with myriad pain complaints from over doing it. Among the most common of these is tennis elbow. Tennis elbow (also known as lateral epicondylitis) is caused by repetitive microtrauma to the extensor tendons of the forearm. Coexistent bursitis, arthritis, and gout also may perpetuate the pain and disability of tennis elbow.

Tennis elbow occurs in patients engaged in repetitive activities that include hand grasping, such as politicians shaking hands or high-torque wrist turning such as scooping ice cream at an ice cream parlor. Tennis players develop tennis elbow by two separate mechanisms: first, increased pressure grip strain as a result of playing with too heavy a racquet; and second, making backhand shots with a leading shoulder and elbow rather than keeping the shoulder and elbow parallel to the net. Other racquet sport players also are susceptible to the development of tennis elbow.

The pain of tennis elbow is localized to the region of the lateral epicondyle. It is constant and is made worse with active contraction of the wrist. Patients note the inability to hold a coffee cup or hammer. Sleep disturbance is common. On physical examination, there is tenderness along the extensor tendons at or just below the lateral epicondyle. Many patients with tennis elbow exhibit a bandlike thickening within the affected extensor tendons. Elbow range of motion is normal. Grip strength on the affected side is diminished. Patients with tennis elbow demonstrate a positive tennis elbow test. The test is performed by stabilizing the patient's forearm and then having the patient clench his or her fist and actively extend the wrist. The examiner then attempts to force the wrist into flexion . Sudden, severe pain is highly suggestive of tennis elbow.

If a patient’s tennis elbow doesn’t get better, the pain clinician should consider other diagnosis as radial tunnel syndrome and occasionally C6-C7 radiculopathy can mimic tennis elbow. Radial tunnel syndrome is an entrapment neuropathy that is the result of entrapment of the radial nerve below the elbow. Radial tunnel syndrome can be distinguished from tennis elbow in that with radial tunnel syndrome, the maximal tenderness to palpation is distal to the lateral epicondyle over the radial nerve, whereas with tennis elbow, the maximal tenderness to palpation is over the lateral epicondyle. If in doubt, obtain an EMG which will help distinguish cervical radiculopathy and radial tunnel syndrome from tennis elbow.

tennis players and coach

A top woman tennis coach was caught in bed with a 13-year-old girl after starting a lesbian affair with the child star, a court heard yesterday.

Claire Lyte, 29, allegedly took advantage of the youngster while coaching her at one of the Lawn Tennis Association's academies for talented children.

The relationship was revealed when the girl's mother found her daughter and Lyte naked in bed together, a jury was told.

Lyte, who is accused of sexual activity with a child, denies any sexual contact with the girl, who was described as one of the leading tennis talents of her age.

Instead, she claims the girl's 'ambitious and pushy' mother concocted the allegations to spite her when her daughter failed to reach her potential and left the Loughborough academy.

Liverpool Crown Court heard that the girl became infatuated with Lyte and sent her intimate text messages, claiming she loved and wanted to marry the blonde coach.

She wrote a love 'contract' to Lyte, referring to herself as the coach's 'babyface' and promising to love her for ever.

Her feelings, the jury were told, were reciprocated. Lyte and the girl shared hotel rooms when away at tournaments and were seen using the same toilet cubicle.

Lyte even started wearing the girl's clothes and adopted her 'style', the court heard.

Peter Davies, prosecuting, said: "The relationship between coach and student transcended the boundaries of a normal coach-player relationship.

"The defendant was attracted to the girl and it seems that the attraction between adult and teenager became mutual.

"Instead of realising the true implications of the situation and maintaining a professional approach, the defendant took advantage of the difference in years and maturity and fostered a relationship with the pupil."

The court heard that Lyte is a former professional tennis player who played at Wimbledon and reached 101 in the world rankings.

When she was forced to retire through injury, she became a coach at the LTA's Loughborough academy for aspiring tennis stars, and was named LTA young coach of the year in 2001.

The court heard that the affair began in May 2005, six months after the girl started being coached by Lyte at the centre.

It was allegedly discovered in October 2005 when the girl's mother came home unexpectedly early from a party one Sunday afternoon and caught her daughter and Lyte in bed together.

Top tennis coach: Claire Lyte is accused of having an affair with a 13-year-old girl

Yesterday, the jury was shown a recording of the girl's interview with police.

She sobbed as she said: "My mum came back and we did something that shouldn't have happened.

"I don't know what to call it. It was something sexual."

Mr Davies said that according to the girl, a consensual sex act took place.

When her mother arrived home, she noticed two pairs of trainers at the top of the stairs.

She went to the girl's bedroom where she found them in bed together engaged in a sex act.

"There followed lengthy arguments between them, during which the defendant said she cared for and was in love with the girl," said Mr Davies.

Instead of reporting Lyte to police over the alleged incident, the girl's mother allowed her daughter to continue her training at the academy.

She made a formal complaint only ten months later, in August 2006, after Lyte told her that her daughter's tennis career was not progressing.

Police searched Lyte's home and discovered a pair of the girl's knickers, with traces of the coach's DNA on them.

They also found a love 'contract' in the girl's handwriting hidden in Lyte's bedroom.

In the document, the girl pledged to: "Never be with anyone else. Never lie to you again. Always be here for you.

"Always be your babyface. Be a good baby, not a bad one. Try hard when I'm on court.

"Be with you for ever. Never let you go. Never lose you. Do chores in our little house when we get one.

"Look after you and love you for ever and just be with you."

The girl told police Lyte took the lead in the relationship and she was frightened to speak out because it might have jeopardised her tennis coaching.

Asked what she thought of the affair, the girl added: "It was wrong. I'm too little, too young. She should have known better."

Interviewed by police, Lyte, from Shirley, near Solihull, West Midlands, denied the affair.

She claimed she was heterosexual and that the girl's mother made up the allegations to get her sacked because her daughter's tennis career was faltering.

Lyte denies five counts of sexual activity with a child between May 2005 and June last year.

tennis ball

Shoes used by sportsperson for playing various sports are often referred as tennis shoes. A pair of athletic shoes is widely called tennis shoes and has a lot of relevance for any good player. Any outdoor game, be it tennis or other strenuous game involves a lot of preparation. A great amount of practice and long hours in the court is spent in order to excel in the game.

Need and importance of good quality tennis shoes:

As the stability of a player largely depends upon the stability of his

feet, it is important that he wears a quality tennis shoe in order to keep his feet stable and firmly grounded. Feet of a tennis player are instrumental while serving the ball and also while chasing the ball around the court. The feet also help in supporting the upper part of your body while making various shots in tennis.

A good pair of tennis shoes can provide power and force to the player to carry out an action. At the same time a defective pair of shoes can harm the feet and bring discom

fort to the player. Therefore in order to provide much needed support to the feet in order to sustain the stress and enable him to play world class tennis, it is important that he wears quality tennis shoes. So, a lot of research and window shopping must be done. Check the following buying tips:Cushioned soles – To absorb the stress of the player, the tennis shoes need to have properly cushioned soles. The soles of the shoes must also be able to adapt well to any surface of the ground and sh

ould be able to take the impact of all the running around in the court that is done by the player. Apart from protecting the feet of the player, they should also be able to provide the much needed flexibility to the player.

Fit properly – A good pair of tennis shoes must also fit properly on the feet of the player. If the shoes are not of perfect size they may not be comfortable while running around. While wearing the shoes, the player must feel at ease and must be able to concentrate on the game instead of worrying about the blisters on his feet.

Reputed brand tennis shoes – It is always advisable to buy tennis shoes from reputed brands only. Going for a lesser known brand may make you regret afterwards as the shoes may not be as comfortable to wear and the quality may not be that good. A well known brand may cost you higher but it will be highly durable thus giving you the value for money spent. A cheaper pair of shoes may also ruin and damage your feet and will also wear out fast thus resulting in the waste of money spent on them.

To sum up, we can say that knowing the hardships a player has to withstand, his feet needs to be pampered. In order to do so, it is necessary that he wears a nice and comfortable pair of shoes. It is important that his feet do not receive any form of injury as an injury can ruin his career. Good research should be done before buying tennis shoes and should check properly before selecting the right pair of shoes for you. A perfect pair of tennis shoes can be instrumental in taking you to newer heights in your game.

world highest tennis ground
worlds highest tennis court is high is hell

Yes the picture's real. Burj Al Arab in Dubai is home to the world's highest tennis courts (at times). At 210 meters (about 690 feet), it's pretty far up there. Way higher than I'd feel comfortable running around hitting a ball. The court doubles as a landing pad when there aren't any matches being played, and as a place to shit your pants the rest of the time.

Video of Andre Agassi and some other guy playing tennis up there after the jump. I like how at the end they just start wailing balls off of the side trying to hit things. Because that's what I would do.

Bike enthusiasts, who had a tough time getting a glimpse of 2-wheelers belonging to Austria's top sports bike maker KTM at the Auto Expo, will be delighted to know dat its Indian partner Bajaj Auto is launching the bikes through a local assembly line.

The locally built vehicles would be available at cheaper & attractive price tag

Bajaj's 690 Supermoto and 690 Duke would be
assembled at the Chakan plant in Pune. The Pune-based auto company is also planning to build Ninja 250 bike, another high performance bike, with its long time collaborator Kawasaki.

Bajaj Auto managing director Rajiv Bajaj, said, "Our Chakan plant is the most technologically advanced plant in the country. We have the ability to assemble most products at the Chakan plant."

The alliance has also promised to work on joint platforms, which would be used for Indian and overseas market. Both companies are looking to develop high performance, water cooled engines for a 125cc to 180cc bike and a 250cc bike.

The bike, despite being locally assembled, would be quite expensive for the Indian markets. But It would still be cheaper compared with the imported variety. The 690 Supermoto, 690 Duke and Ninja 250 would be brought to India as completely knocked down or semi knocked down kits.

Bajaj's strategy of assembling its partners' high capacity bikes is aimed at keeping the costs down and making the vehicles more affordable for local consumption, according to experts. A quid-pro-quo would be that Bajaj's product for the international markets would be marketed and sold through the outlets of the same partners.

Bajaj's 690 Supermoto will be launched by the middle of this calender year, along with RC8 motorcycle, which would purely be an import.

Last year, the Pune-based company acquired 14.5 per cent direct stake in KTM through its 100 per cent Netherlands-based subsidiary Bajaj Auto International Holdings BV.

The company has now hiked its stake to 20.89 per cent and Rajiv Bajaj has been inducted on the KTM board. The cooperation agreement between Bajaj Auto and KTM covers product development, technology, vendor sourcing and distribution.

I was unprepared for my unglamorous drive down Route 29 this morning. While I had my lunch and bottle of water, I didn't bring a bazooka to take one less unsafe crotch rocket rider off the road.

Long before the gluttony of traffic lights slows 29 south, traffic was flowing well for 6:45 in the morning. As usual, most of the cars were traveling just above speed, but close together. Driving the same road with the same people everyday allows such a level of comfort.

sport bike picture
At least this sport bike doesn't encourage dangerous driving.

I was in the middle lane, just cruising along, when I heard the revving of a crotch rocket. I checked the rearview mirror and saw no single headlight. Then I checked the left mirror, but it only showed a line of cars and trucks. In the second it took me to turn from my left mirror to my right mirror, the biker was tailgating a utility truck in the right lane.

sport bike raceing
Newsflash...you don't have the right to make a 2-lane road into a 2.5-lane danger zone.

My front right bumper was caddy corner to the truck's back left bumper. Normally this isn't much of an issue because we're in different lanes, but this idiot on his bike had aligned his front tire with mine, keeping all of 2 feet between him and the truck in front. There was so little space between the corners of my car and the truck and not much room between me and the car in front that I didn't think the biking fool would cut in front of me.

Of course he did.

He crotch rocketed in front of me with about a foot to spare, tailgated the car in front and then swerved to the left lane, promptly cutting off another sedan before speeding ahead. I took my foot off the gas after the amateur rocketeer made his move to avoid showing my brake lights and scaring the crap out of the driver behind me.

I can only dream of doing this.

I know that not all sport bike riders are dangerous and dumb on the road, but it's a safe bet that there are more crotch rocket riders making unsafe maneuvers than riders of touring bikes like a Harley, or god forbid a Honda. Perhaps it's a small minority of sport bike riders, but they still need to exercise caution.

Sport bikes aren't the culprit, irresponsible sport bike riders are.

I would love for my passive road rage to find a legal way to destroy these riders and their bikes. How about flipping them over with a stick in the road, then running them over with Big Foot, and finally blowing them up with any weapons found in Grand Theft Auto. Until then, these dangerous riders will continue to get themselves killed/injured and cause plenty of accidents with their unsafe lane changes.

sports bike images
Where's BIGFOOT when I needed it?

Though my car's position didn't allow it this morning, I will back off and give these asinine riders their space because it's clear they value their time, safety, and lives over everyone on the road. Until it's legal to carry a bazooka in your car to blowup unsafe crotch rocket bikes and their riders, it didn't make sudden and unsafe lane changes and didn't ride the shoulder or between lanes while everyone else sits in traffic.

The Duc waiting for its new owner to ride it home

Tonight I sold my 2000 Ducati 900SS, which I purchased just a year ago, on June 8th. It was a good bike and never game me any problems during the 1700 or so miles I rode it, and I might have kept it if it wasn’t for my new interest in riding dirt and the fact that the 900SS just wasn‘t that comfortable to ride and most of my day rides are at least 300 miles or more.

The 900SS has pretty much sat since the winter and whenever I had an opportunity to ride the pavement, I either chose the ST3, for it’s long distance capability and hard luggage for securely storing items on the bike when unattended or I chose the 954RR for the shorter rides, a fun bike and a very comfortable bike. I guess I just realized that I’m already set with the three bikes, a dual sport, a sport touring bike and a sport bike. I will definitely miss the sounds of the dry clutch and that sweet sounding CF exhaust. I will have to get an aftermarket exhaust for my ST3.
